How to Calculate Flooring Quantities

Whether you’re laying laminate, engineered timber, vinyl planks or floor tiles, the starting point is always the same: room area plus waste allowance. This guide covers the maths for every common UK flooring type.

The Formula

  1. Room area = Length (m) × Width (m)
  2. Adjusted area = Room area × (1 + waste%)
  3. Packs needed = Adjusted area ÷ pack coverage (round up)

Waste Allowance Guide

LayoutWaste %When to Use
Straight lay, rectangular room10%Most standard installations
Straight lay, alcoves/bay windows12%Some extra cuts required
Diagonal lay (45°)15%More cuts at walls
L-shaped or irregular room15%Multiple cuts and offcuts
Herringbone pattern20%Significant cutting at edges
Chevron pattern20%Angled cuts at all borders

Laminate Flooring

Pack CoveragePlank Size (typical)Planks per Pack
1.50 m²1200 × 190mm7
1.74 m²1380 × 193mm7
2.00 m²1285 × 192mm8
2.22 m²1380 × 193mm8
2.50 m²1380 × 193mm9

Worked example: 4m × 5m living room, straight lay:

  • Room area = 4 × 5 = 20 m²
  • Add 10% waste = 20 × 1.1 = 22 m²
  • Packs (2.0 m² each) = 22 ÷ 2.0 = 11 packs
  • Underlay = 22 m² → 2 rolls (15 m² rolls) or 1 roll (25 m² roll)

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered boards are wider and longer, so pack coverage is often higher:

Plank WidthTypical Pack CoverageCommon Lengths
150mm2.0–2.5 m²1200–1800mm
190mm2.2–2.8 m²1200–2200mm
220mm2.5–3.0 m²1800–2200mm
260mm+3.0+ m²2000–2400mm

Floor Tiles

Tile SizeTiles per m²Tiles per box (typical)Box Coverage
300 × 300mm11.111~1.0 m²
450 × 450mm4.910~2.0 m²
600 × 300mm5.66~1.1 m²
600 × 600mm2.83–4~1.1–1.4 m²
800 × 800mm1.62~1.3 m²
900 × 150mm (plank)7.48~1.1 m²

Don’t forget tile adhesive and grout:

ProductCoverage
Tile adhesive (20kg bag)4–5 m² (floor tiles, 6mm bed)
Tile grout (5kg bag)5–8 m² (depends on tile size and joint width)
Self-levelling compound (25kg)4–6 m² at 3mm depth

Vinyl / LVT Flooring

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and vinyl plank flooring follows the same area calculation:

FormatTypical Pack Coverage
Click LVT planks2.0–2.5 m²
Glue-down LVT planks2.0–3.3 m²
Click LVT tiles1.5–2.0 m²

Add 10% waste for click-fit LVT; 5% for glue-down (less waste from cuts).

From Flooring Quantities to a Full Estimate

This calculator gives you material quantities. A complete flooring estimate also includes:

  • Subfloor preparation (levelling, DPM, insulation)
  • Labour (typically £15–25/m² for laminate installation, £25–40/m² for tiling)
  • Skirting board removal and refitting
  • Door trimming (most doors need cutting after new flooring)
  • Waste removal

EasyEstimate’s flooring calculators cover all of these elements with live UK pricing — from materials to labour to finishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?
Multiply the room length by the room width to get the area in square metres. Add 10% for waste (cuts, damaged boards, offcuts). For L-shaped rooms, split into rectangles and add them together.
How many packs of laminate flooring do I need?
Divide your total area (including waste) by the pack coverage. Most laminate packs cover 1.5–2.5 m². For example, a 15 m² room with 10% waste = 16.5 m². If each pack covers 2.0 m², you need 9 packs.
How much underlay do I need for laminate flooring?
You need the same area as your flooring plus 5% for overlaps. Underlay typically comes in rolls of 15 m² or 25 m². For a 15 m² room, one 15 m² roll plus a small amount from a second roll.
What waste allowance should I use for flooring?
Use 10% for rectangular rooms with straight-lay patterns. Use 15% for diagonal layouts, L-shaped rooms, or rooms with many alcoves. Use 20% for herringbone or chevron patterns.
How many floor tiles per square metre?
It depends on tile size: 300×300mm = 11 tiles per m², 450×450mm = 5 tiles per m², 600×600mm = 3 tiles per m². Always add 10–15% for cuts and breakage.
